![]() As for the original question if I was going to have a new brake installed I would use the Vais Arms Inc. I think that any tool that will allow the shooter to shoot better especially in a hunting situation and to get more youngsters involved is a great thing. I think that the fastest way to turn a young kid away from hunting is letting them shoot a rifle that hurts and leaves a burse on their shoulder. I do agree with others that for a seasoned shooter you don’t really need one until you get into those higher end magnum size caliber but I think for inexperienced shooters they are an excellent tool as they will have a less tendency to develop the jerks. I give everyone a chance to put their ear protection on if they choose to wear it and if not then it’s up to them to deal with the ringing. As for the people in close proximity, I try to give everyone a heads up I'm about to go hot and send one down range. When at the range especially a public range I think I would rather hear one load boom from time to time then some kid with an AR just burning through ammo like it’s the end of the world as we know it. There’s no doubt that they produce a lot more decibels then a rifle without one but I think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantage. However both of them also have thread protectors so they can be removed if I go to a range that doesn't allow them. I myself am a big fan of the brakes I have two rifles that have them installed and enjoy shooting them both. I can imagine that when shooting a 338 lapua or a 378 wby mag that one wants a muzzle brake, but for cartridges below this level i feel they are not necessary. The discussion will continue, we don`t give up. Range time is expensive here, an a lot of shooters want to concentrate on their shooting, the performance of their reloads ect., whithout being disturbed. they ignore this considerations even it is written down as a standard when you build a shooting range. My dad and i recently had a unsucessful discussion with our very old fashioned hunting organisation for lower austria about installing walls between shooting benches on their ranges, because of shooters using muzzle brakes. On the websites of some european makers of muzzle brakes you will find a warning that installing the brake will raise noise levels. I even made one for my short barreled mauser to reduce muzzle jump, but after completing the rifle it turned out it is precise as hell without the brake. ![]() I always thought i need to have one, but i don`t.
